Improving QR Code Scanning

The Client's Challenge

During the Covid pandemic, QR codes became essential for verifying vaccination status. These were necessary to enter various events, such as soccer matches or music festivals. The challenge was immense, especially when dealing with large crowds. For instance, scanning codes using traditional pixel-by-pixel methods takes about 10 seconds per scan. Imagine having to scan  20,000 QR codes at a music festival, over 55 hours of scanning time, excluding additional processes like showing the code, result verification, and identity checks. Even with 40 operators, each of them would spend more than an hour scanning.

The Solution

To address this challenge, we embedded AI-based scanning technologies. These AI scanners offered significant advantages. They were more versatile in handling various challenges like orientation, lighting issues, paper conditions, and even partial obstructions of the QR code, thanks to error correction capabilities inherent in QR codes.

The business impact

The adoption of these AI scanning solutions revolutionized the process. Scanning time was reduced to less than a second per code, marking an improvement of over 10 times the original speed. This efficiency was achieved without the need for bespoke machine learning solutions, illustrating the profound impact that leveraging existing AI tools can have in practical business applications.
