AI adoption in the public sector comes with more than just finding the right use cases. Digipolis Antwerpen wanted to turn its AI ambitions into a practical framework for responsible adoption.
Digipolis Antwerpen recognized the potential of artificial intelligence. They also understood that successful adoption requires more than just experimenting with new technology. As the IT partner for the City of Antwerp and its affiliated organizations, Digipolis wanted a structured approach that balanced innovation with governance, security, and organizational readiness. The goal was not simply to introduce AI, but to create a sustainable framework that would support future initiatives through outt he organization.
Together with Digipolis, we developed an organization-wide approach to AI governance that provides clear guidance while allowing for innovation.
The collaboration started by analyzing existing security policies and governance frameworks. These were turned into a practicalAI governance charter, supported by guidelines, approval processes, and decision frameworks. These help teams evaluate new AI initiatives consistently.By defining responsibilities and establishing practical governance from the start, Digipolis built a foundation that enables experimentation without risking security or compliance.

Governance alone does not create value. To find where AI could have the biggest impact, we organized inspiration sessions and interactive workshops across the organization. Employees explored practical AI applications, documented ideas using a structured use case framework, and submitted opportunities through a central intake process. Each proposal was evaluated for feasibility, business value, and alignment with governance principles. Then management prioritized the most promising initiatives for future implementation.
The outcome is more than just a collection of AI ideas. Digipolis now has a structured roadmap that connects governance, implementation priorities, employee adoption, and measurable objectives. The roadmap provides clear guidance on which initiatives to pursue and how they should be governed.
With a practical governance framework and a prioritized implementation roadmap in place, Digipolis Antwerpen is well positioned to expand AI across the organization in a controlled and responsible way.
Instead of treating AI as a series of isolated experiments, the organization now has a scalable foundation that supports long-term innovation while maintaining security, compliance, and organizational alignment.
